If you ask any manager what their favorite day to work is,
they would either reply, “Any day I am not closing”, or “Sunday”. Sunday is a
great day to work because we close early. The store is open to shoppers from
10:00am to 6:00pm.
I know, I know, this sounds like we all have terrible work
ethic. At times, yes that is true. But after a long week of dealing with
everyone, this is almost like a small treat if you have to work that day.
I have school Monday through Wednesday, so in order to make
my required hours, I work Thursday through Sunday. I usually close on Sundays,
which I am totally fine with. Sometimes I am the only manager at the store, and
this is usually when insane events occur.
This past Sunday was quite typical. Very slow and calm. The
game was on, and it was in the 70’s so not too many were out and about
shopping. I only ran into a few issues with returns, but it was honestly a
normal day.
It finally struck 6:00pm. I went over to the door and locked
it, like I normally do. Then I heard screaming outside. I turned around to see
a family screaming at me because I had locked the door. I was on track for
getting out of the store in record time so I decided I would need to calmly
tell them that we had already closed for the night.
An older woman began shouting and pounding on the door. She
kept screaming “OH NO”. After finding out that everyone was okay and they just
wanted to shop, I thought that she was the spitting image of this woman.
They simply wanted to shop. I unfortunately could not say
no, and the woman accompanying this older woman causing a scene promised she
would be very quick and only wanted one shirt. I understood that the
circumstance, but I think this could have been calmly stated and I would have
let her in before the other woman screamed at me.
This experience has not changed my views on Sunday Funday at
work, but I think I would have been fine if it didn’t happen.
